The Launch of Friends of St Augustines Church Penarth
Saturday 10th November 2012 at St. Augustine's Church Penarth 6.30pm
There is an interesting and rather special project that is taking shape in Penarth. A group of people, some from St Augustine’s church, and others not from the church, have come together to form ‘Friends of St Augustine’s’. This remarkable church, Penarth’s only Grade 1 listed building and one of the famous Victorian architect William Butterfield’s finest buildings, is currently maintained by a much smaller congregation than when it was built in 1866. They alone cannot be expected to carry this burden for much longer on behalf of the Penarth community as a whole,
Friends of St Augustine’s want to complement the existing fund raising activities run by the Parish in order to ensure that the church building can be repaired and maintained in a manner deserving of a unique local landmark. Our main aim is to ensure that this iconic building, used by sailors for generations as a ‘seamark’, and known by locals as ‘Top Church’ remains a building we can be proud of, is around for future generations to enjoy, and is better known and used for a variety of activities by more people.
This venture is not just about raising money. In the course of setting this project up, we quickly became aware of how much enjoyment it could provide for people prepared to get involved. We are planning events, such as concerts, talks, outings, exhibitions etc., but we are also wanting to create a group of people who will enjoy getting together for some of the social events, and who will share our excitement about learning about the architecture and putting this rather special landmark back on the map. We already have some rather interesting projects in the pipeline – watch this space!
If you are interested, there are various ways you could help. We are launching the Friends on 10th November. We hope you will be able to come and, if convinced about the value of the project, become a friend. You could also help us enormously if you know of anyone else who might be interested.
We do hope you will consider becoming a Friend of St Augustine’s. If you do join us, your friendship will be much appreciated, not only by the Friends, but also by generations to come..
